HARRIERS
KIATERE CLUB.
On the kind invitation of Mr and Mrs R. Liverton the Kiatere Harrier Club held a run from their residence at Eewanui on Saturday. Over fifty members and supporters were present and all appreciated the outing very much. Messrs J. Ryder and Walter Burns made good use of the ideal harrier country available and laid an excellent course over 3 l-Bth miles. The junior sealed handicap race was started first for which there were seven starters. G. Sutherland showed good form and after leading all the way had a comfortable win from B. Falloon and A. Wilton, who dead-heated for second place. With handicaps deducted the plaeingSi were: G. Sutherland 1, B. Falloon 2, A. Wilton 3. . The senior race was very keenly contested, as for this event Mr and Mrs Liverton had generously donated a handsome silver cup, to be known as the Rewanui Cup, and which has to ;be won three times. The runners, com'prising over twenty, were started on open handicap and did two laps of the course. At the end of the first lap J. Laing off the limit held the lead from W. Burgess (lmin) and F. Cole (4min). During the last lap W. Burgess obtained the lead closely followed by W. Burns and F. Cole. These positions were maintained to the tape. W. Burgess secured a well earned and popular win. Fastest times were: W. Burgess 39.28, W. Burns 39.30, M. Quayle 40.15. After the run runners and supporters were served a most enjoyable afternoon tea by Mrs Liverton and the Misses Livertons, and was followed by a sing song with Mr F. Gray at the piano. Much appreciated musical items were given by Miss M. Liverton and Mrs Liverton.
When presenting the Rewanui Cup and a trophy donated by the host and hostess to the winner of the junior race, Mr Liverton congratulated the winners, and also made reference to the excellent general all-round performances.
Mr C. Traill, club president, spoke thanking Mr and Mrs Liverton for their generosity and hospitality and a most enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close until the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
MASTERTON CLUB.
TOWN v. COUNTRY RACE
About 25 members of the Masterton Harrier Club held an 8-mile Town v. Country teams race on Saturday, over a gruelling course comprising mostly of hills, which proved ideal training for the forthcoming Wanganui visit. The Town team, captained by G. Kempton, won by a margin of 24 points from Country, captained by C. Talbot. The first men home were: C. Talbot 1, G. Kempton 2, L. Hack 3. The sealed handicap, run in conjunction, with the points counting for the Shaw Rose Bowl, resulted: —G. Kempton, 12 points; S. Hatch, 11; L. Hack, 10; R. Shaw, 9; J. Lochore, 8; J. War. ham, 7; J. Mulvey, 6; C. Talbot, 5; R. Warham, 4; E. Creswell, 3; E. Wyeth, 2; H. Adcock, 1. The junior club had a run of 2$ miles under the capable supervision of Mr A. Spicer, who will be in charge of the junior boys this season.
