STATE THEATRE. “PASSPORT TO FAME,” Edward G. Robinson, tlie screen’s outstanding character actor, will be seen in his first serio-comic role in Columbia’s “Passport to Fame, wliicli comes to the State Theatio tonight. Based on a story by of a meek, poetic office clerk who lias sprung into the headlines because of his remarkable o resemblance to the country’s most dangerous criminal. To prevent police from molesting lum, the District Attorney gives Robinson a letter, or passport, which is to identity him as the respectable citizen and not the public enemy whom he so strongly resembles. Killer Mannion, Ins double obtains possession of the passport and thus goes about his criminal activities with comparative immunity. Lovely Jean Arthur is east in the picture as the girl whom Robinson has always loved but has been too shy to woo. V ith his unexpected distinction and newlyfound courage he turns the table on his hard-boiled counterpart and crashes through to a heart-stirring climax. There is a strong supporting cast. “SHADOW OF DOUBT.” A Metro-Goldwyn-jMayer picture version of Arthur Somers Roche s baffling mystery story, “Shadow of Doubt,” which kept readers in suspense for many weeks, comes, to the Cosy Theatre to-morrow. Ricardo Cortez and Virginia Bruce head an imposing cast. “Shadow of Doubt” deals with the interesting people of both Broadway and Park Avenue and those more sinister characters who haunt the streets between. Instead of the usual suave and fearless amateur detective, this story deals with a picturesque, elderly woman, possessor oj. millions, a recluse in America’s biggest city who emerges from obscurity to solve a “perfect crime.” Pitted against the cunning of the city s best detectives and the power of its police, this remarkable character creates something entirely new to both the films and fiction. “BULLDOG DRUMMOND.” “The Return of Bulldog Drummond, ’ ’ 8.1. P. ’s stirring screen adaptation of that sensational Sappei story, “The Black Gang,” which comes to the Regent Theatre to-mor-row, is said to be probably the most thrilling action-drama yet to come from an English studio. Many of the sequences are amazingly realistic, and bear distinct evidence of exciting and interesting work during production. The thrill-packed situation which provides the sensational climax of the picture is that in which Drummond and his wife are threatened with death by drowning at the murderous hands of Carl Petersen and his band of villainous confederates. The death bath is actually prepared, but Drummond’s quick thinking and hard hitting effects a temporary escape. The wholo story of “The Return of Bulldog Drummond” literally teems with action, thrills, suspense, romance, and more action from end to end. The big cast is headed by Ralph Richardson as “Bulldof Drummond,” Ann Todd, and Claud Allister (“Alev”). Seats may be reserved at Perry’s, ’phono 2496.
