ABSURD RUMOURS OF COUP D’ETAT. Press Association Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, Monday. Reports that an aeroplane is in readiness to take ex-King George to Athens at a moment’s notice are denied by the Mayor of Athens,, who arrived in London, for the purpose, it is reported, of consulting ex-King George regarding the coming plebiscite concerning the restoration of the monarchy in Greece.
The “Daily Herald” says that the Mayor spent the day closeted with exKing George at his hotel. The Mayor told the “Daily Herald” that rumours of a coup d’etat were absurd. ExKing George would wait until the people asked him to return. The “Daily Herald’s” Athens correspondent says the general opinion in Greece is that the Mayor told the exKing that his chances in the plebiscite were poor, and that he should therefore ask the Government to postpone or abandon the poll. It is reported from Athens that Cabinet has banned meetings either for or against the present regime until after the plebiscite.
