COKE MEASURE.
(The Editor.) Sir,—Your correspondent, “Fair Play,” is a little out of order. The law of tho land demands that coke shall be sold by weight, and the law is obeyed to the*letter by all the Masterton coke dealers. Although standardisation of weight is not required by law, the Masterton coke dealers have adopted the standard of the local Gas Department, and all coke is sold in sacks not less than 901bs. This has been the standard for many years. If your correspondent ever gets a sack labelled 901b5., and finds only 85 lbs. of coke in it, he should immediately send for the inspector.—l am, etc., COKE DEALER,
(The Editor.) Sir, —The regulations regarding the sale of coke by our Weights and Measures Department, printed in yesterday’s “Daily Times,” surprise me. Coke is a very absorbent fuel. I have weighed a sack of wet coke and found it to weigh as much as 1401bs. I have known a similar sack of dry coke to weigh 801bs. Coke varies in type. Some tvpes of coke are very light and absorbent. I must conclude it is quite legal for a dealer who buys dry coke to add 10 or 201bs. of water per sack and gain something like -Id for it (the prico of coke at the present time). A safer and better proposition than watering the milk. The regulations do not convince me of the fairness of selling coke by weight, particularly crushed coke, which could easily be sold by measure. However, the opinions of other coke consumers would be interesting. Thanking you.—l am, etc., * * FAIR PLAY.
