ROAD CYCLING

MASTERTON CLUB. (By “Spokes.”) The Masterton Road Cycling Club on Saturday held a 28-mile race from KurL puni Triangle to Greytown and back, under perfect weather conditions, the results being as follows: —C. Osborne (ser.) 1, E. Saver (scr.) 2, J. Hanley (ser.) 3. The same three riders secured fastest time honours. * * * * The first rider away was Swanson. This lad rides a great race, but if.lie did a little more solid training he would soon be able to finish in a place.

W. Burns and Ireland were the next to leave. They are not riding at all well. This was W. Burns’ first ride of the season.

T. Sayers and M. Dooling left next. These boys ride a great race. M. Dooling, especially, is riding in great form just now, and if he practises sprinting a little more he would benefit much by it. •'****

A. Rigg rode off with the scratch riders, C. Osborne, E. Saycr and J. Hanley. I think Rigg should get a little better handicap. He is not riding up to form, and he has not had a win or a place for several weeks. The kandicapper should be a little more generous to him.

C. Osborne gave his co-markers a great surprise in the sprint home by taking Hanley and Sayers unawares. * * * *

E. Sayers and Hanley should be more wide-awake towards the finish of a race.

Hanley had a little bad luck by falling at the turn. This gave his co-mark-ers time to rest waiting for him to catch up, which was a very sporting move on their part. * * * *

B. James did not ride on Saturday. He states that lie is finished for the T ear - .

C. Osborne had improved a lot this week. Ho was seen training hard last week on the Masterton-Solway road.

B. Deane has retired until the distances get a little smaller. This rider is a little too young to start riding in the long races. * * * *

B. Watt and P. Simonson have retired for this season. They both have too much Avork to do. Of course, Avork must come before sport. * * * *

The next week’s eAmnt Avill be a 33miles road race, starting from Kuripuni to Gladstone and back through Carterton. This event Avill start at 2.15 p.m. sharp.
