CARTERTON LIBRARY

ANNUAL MEETING. (Special to “Daily Times.’'; At the annual meeting of the Carterton Public Library, held on Monday in the Library rooms, the president, Mr L. J. ITarding, was in the chair. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, Mr A. E. Hall stated that the position was very satisfactory, the committee being indebted to Mr Harding for the tremendous amount of work done by him during the term of his office of president for the past ten years, at times carrying on without a committee.

These remarks were endorsed by Mr W. Vaughan, and a hearty vote of thanks was carried by acclamation. Mr Harding’s resignation as president was accepted with regret. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —Presi-,-dent, Mr V. Vaughan; vice-president, Mr A. E. Hall; secretary, Mrs E. Magnusson; selection committee, Mrs E. Magnusson, Miss C. Welch and Mr V. Vaughan; general committee, Mesdames Tyler, Edge, Magnusson, Miss C. Welch, Rev. W. F. .Stent, Mr A. E. Hall, jMr K. Brazendale, and borough representatives. During the year representations were made to the Borough and County Councils for increased assistance, resulting in the borough making a special grant of £ls, and me County Council increasing the annual grant from £2O to £25, and giving a special grant of £ls. One hundred and sixty now books were added to tlie library, 109 by purchase, costing £2l 4s, and 51 being donated by Mrs Eceles when resigning her position as librarian, owing to a serious breakdown in health.

Special thanks are due to the Borough and County Councils for the increased assistance, and the committee also desiro to thank those who donated books and magazines. The membership is now 12(3, subscriptions for the year being £7l l(3s 3d. Grants totalled £lls. Storm damage had cost £4 2s 6d, but this did not include several outbuildings which had been completely wrecked and had not yet been rebuilt. Two of these, the washhouse and woodshed, were required for everyday use by the librarian, and something will have to be done to raise funds for the purpose. The committee’s thanks are due to those who helped during Mrs Eceles’ illness; to Mrs Magnusson for acting as librarian, to Mr Barber for auditing the books, the press for most helpful publicity, and to Mrs Drew, the present librarian. An appeal is made to all subscribers and the public generally to support the library and thus assist the committee to keep the library going and enable the purchase of new books.
