THE MAYOR OF MASTERTON.
AN EX-WELLINGTON REP.
(By “Blue and Gold.”)
It may not be generally known that Mr T. Jordan, Mayor of Masterton, was in his younger days a noted footballer in Wellington, and a few years ago was the Red Star Football Club’s delegate on the management committee of the Wairarapa Rugby Union. He was a member of the Wellington Old Boys’, senior team the first year that combination played in the Wellington senior championship, another member being tho late Dave Logan, father of Jack Logan, of Masterton. Also in that team was “Mona” Thomson (All Black), tho late Erny Dodd (All Black) and Eric Watkins (All Black, North Island and N.Z. League representative), the latter two being two of the best hookers tho Dominion has ever known, their only superiors probably being Stovo Casey, of tho Southern Club (Dunedin) and George Tyler (Auckland), tho hookers in tho 1905 All Black team which went Home.
Tom Jordan played for Wellington in 1904, tho year that tho Empire City fifteen defeated Auckland for the Ranfurly Shield in that titanic struggle in the Queen City, when Wellington wonby 6 points to 3. He also played j;or Wellington in 1907 when Wellington again beat Auckland —11 to 3. Wellington that season had, besides Tom, such noted All Black players as Freddy Roberts, Frank Mitcliinson, W. Reedy, Jim Ryan, Jack Spencer, Bill Wallace, and “Ranji” Wilson. Tom was a fine stamp of a forward, a grafter from start to finish, who played that intelligent type_ of game which made him such a decided acquisition to tho Old Boys and tho Wellington reps. A SINGER’S JUBILEE. MR HARRY HALL. Hr connection with the Red Star jubilee re-union in tho Municipal Hall on Saturday evening, the following will contribute to the musical programme :-i-Mcssrs J. Shatter, V. Greer, Harry Hall, Price. S. Moroncy and J. Chapman, with Mr Hope-Miller at the piano.
It is interesting to note that this year is the jubilee year of -Mr Harry Hall as a singer. The genial Harrj r , in his younger days, was one of the bestknown and cleverest comedians on the New Zealand and Australian stage, and was often referred to as the “New Zealand Harry Lauder.” Associated with several prominent companies as a comedian, Harry subsequently toured New Zealand with a company of his own—- “ Harry Hall’s Entertainers.” Over a lengthy period of years, Harry has willingly given his services free in connection with local concerts, dramatic performances, etc., and has an enviable reputation as an actor, as well as a comedian. The people of Masterton will extend their hearty congratulations to Harry on his jubilee, and every good wish for the future.
