WOOL MARKET

WELLINGTON SALES. IMPROVEMENT IN PRICES. WELLINGTON, Friday. A strong finish to an unsatisfactory season was made at the fifth and final wool sale at Wellington to-day. Many buyers appeared to have elastic limits, and at times there was a perfect drumfire of bidding. The offering was a small one of 9000 bales, compared with 16,000 for the corresponding sale last year. The bulk of the catalogues comprised largely top-making crossbreds. There was a fully representative bench of buyers. French interests were the main driving force. Bradford operated extensively. Prices generally were at the highest point of the 1934-35 season.

Compared with the March sale at Wellington, prices showed the following advances: —Extra fine crossbreds, Id to 13 d; fine, medium and coarse, §d to Id; low, 3d; hoggets, Id; bellies and pieces, Id to lAd; crutchings, par to id; locks, id. The following is the official range of prices, compared with that for the March sale in parentheses:— Merino: Average, 93d to 103 d (9d to 9-Id); inferior to 8d (7d to 8d). "Fine halfbred, 56/58: Average, 9-id to 10 Ad (8d to 9jd); inferior, 7d to B:}d (7d to 7fd). Medium halfbred, 50/56: Average, 73d to 9?d (7fd to 93d); inferior, 6d to 7Ad (53d to 7Ad). Extra fine crossbred, 48/50: Average, 53d to 7d (Old to 7Ad); inferior, 6jd (4Ad). Fine crossbred, 46/48: Super, Bpi to 83d (7d to 8Id); average, 61d to 8d (53d to 63d); inferior, 43d to 6)d (4d to 5Ad). Medium crossbred, 44/46: Super, 7d to 73d (6id to 7-id); average, 53d to 63d (5d to 6d); inferior, 4d to 5Ad (33d to 43d). Coarse crossbred, 40/44: Average, 5Ad to 61d (41d to s ld). Low crossbred, 36/40: Average, 41d to 5Ad (4d to 43d). Hoggets, 48/50: 61d to lOd (old to 9d); fine, 44/48, 6Jd to 83d (51 d to 8d). , Lambs: Down, 50/56, 61d to 83d (Old to Hid); fine, 44/40, 6jd to Sd (old to 9d); seedy and inferior, 4d to Od (21d to 51d). Bellies and pieces: Merino, low to medium, 51d to 6d (53d to Old); halfbred, good to super, to Bid (to 63d); low to medium, 43d to Old (3d to 53d); crossbred, good to super, 21d to 4ld (33d to 6d); low to medium, 21d to 41d (21d to 4d). BROKERS’ REPORTS. Messrs .Levin and Co., Ltd., report:— Our catalogue totalled 1075 bales. -The wool was largely crossbred of topmaking character. The quantity of halfbred was negligible. Since the sale on 21st March the sales elsewhere in the Dominion have shown a strong tone. This seems to have followed the announcement of conscription in Germany, lengthened service term in France, and the general international unsettlement which lias ensued.. There is an old proverb about an ill-wind. Whilst noting the probable causes, it could have been wished that the. demand had risen entirely from ordinary trade improvement. Bidding was brisk, and buyers apparently had clastic limits. Bradford was bidding freely, but France was securing the larger proportion of the offering. Dominion mills were silent. The following advances are recorded against March sale:— Merino and halfbreds, not sufficient to quote; extra fine crossbreds, 48/50, Id to Ijd up; fine and medium crossbreds, 44/48, Id up;, coarse crossbred, 40/44, Ad to 3d up; low crossbreds, 36/40, Ad up; hoggets, Id up; lambs, par; crossbred bellies and pieces, 3d to lAd up; crutchings, par; locks, |d up. The season closes at the highest point for the series. We sold 86 per cent, under the hammer. The following Wairarapa clips wero sold by us: —P-O.D: 811 73d. Maire/XX: B 63d. Maungawhare: AE 7Ad.
