TRUST GRANTS.
In view of the heavy loss sustained by the Trust Lands Trust as the'result of last year’s disastrous earthquake, the Trust has found itself considerably handicapped in providing grants. The Trustees are undoubtedly doing their best in the adverse circumstances in regard to grants, but local institutions must be prepared to see their grants cut down or refused until the Trustees have had a reasonable time in which to “balance their budget.” Many citizens who study the affairs of the Trust Lands Trust hold the view that the policy of the Trust is wrong in regard to many .of the grants made, but that is beside the question at the moment. What must be borne in mind is that the trustees only have a certain amount of money to disburse in grants, and that the children come first in this connection, and, further, that extraordinary circumstances have arisen which compels the trustees to walk warily down the financial road. The trustees undoubtedly are willing to help every institution which comes within the scope of their operations, but too much cannot be expected just now by those organisations which. have been in the past in receipt of Trust assistance.
