MEAT IMPORTS
CLASH OF INTERESTS CONCILIATION NECESSARY. - ; Press Association Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, Friday. The newspapers welcome Mr J. A. Lyons (Commonwealth Premier) and publish photographs and details of his mission. " Tho “Daily Telegraph” says: — “The clash of Anglo-Australian meat interests can only be resolved by personal discussions in a spirit of intelligent conciliation. If Mr Lyons stands on his rights under the Ottawa Agreement he can certainly stop the imposition o'f a levy for the present, but theBritish Government in that case can impose those quantitative restrictions to which objections have been raised in Australia.
Neither country, it is added, is likely ‘to negotiate in ignorance of those possibilities, but the expedient under which Britain is delaying action by a temporary subsidy and Australia is ceasing to export mutton are signs of willingness to work out the difficulties in a friendly manner.
DELEGATION TO LONDON.
INCLUSION OF MR COATES URGED
WELLINGTON, Friday. At a meeting of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ .Board during a discussion on the forthcoming negotiations in London relating to a long-term agreement on meat imports, the board unanimously passed the following resolution: —“That this board is very strongly of opinion that the Rt. Hon. the Prime Minister and the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates should represent New Zealand in the forthcoming long-term discussions with the British Government in London. ’ ’
The board is very concerned as to the great importance and far-reaching possibilities of the coming discussions. The board is firmly of opinion that Mr Coates, with his experience of the Ottawa discussions, would greatly strengthen the delegation, and considers it of the utmost importance to ensure that this Dominion should send the strongest possiblo delegation to London. —(P.A.)
