WASTING WATER.

During the recent spell of dry weather there has been ample evidence that Masterton has a sufficient supply of water when reasonable care is exercised in its use. It is the wilful waste by selfish residents that brings about inconvenience in some parts of the borough and makes the danger from fire an aggravated one. When we find residents individually using thirty to forty thousand gallons of Avater in three weeks or so, it is certainly time that more stringent regulations than those AAdiich now operate A\ r ere put into force. If such glaring- examples of the Avaste of Avater continue, the Borough Council Avould be quite justified in restricting the use of Avater to four hours or less a day. No municipality in NeAV Zealand has such generous regulations that alloAV gardens to be watered for fourteen hours a day. There is a type of person in the borough Avho fondly belieA'es that he or she has a right to use unlimited water, but the Council cannot alloAV itself to indulge a feAV at the expense of the bulk of the residents, and especially Avhere there is a constant danger of a serious outbreak of fire "during hot weather, when grass, etc., is tinder-dry. The Council has fihe poAver to stop Avaste of Avater, and the ratepayers generally look to the Council to compel respect for the regulations.
