AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. MELBOURNE, Thursday. Before : a crowd of 4500 people, play was continued to-day in the Australian tennis championships. ' Suffering from weakness in his first service, Crawford was taken to five sets in the first semi-final of the men s singles. Although defeated, Quist enhanced his reputation, driving splendidly and showing ability to take the offensive. Crawford won through pressure in the final stages and the recovery of his first service strength. Hopman and Maier’s success was largely due to the adoption of the. Stevenson, 6/3, 6/3. Quarterfinal: Miss Round (Britain) and Miss Covne, defeated Mrs Malcolm. (South Africa j and Miss Chitty, 6/2, 6/0. Semi-final: Misses Lyle and Dearman (Britain) defeated Mesdames Moleswortli and Westacott, 6/4, 6/4. “C” GRADE COMPETITION. TE ORE ORE TEAM.
