DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP.
CARTERTON TO MASTERTON
The ' ten miles Wairarapa District Championship, which is to be run on Saturday, is, as usual, creating wide interest, and promises to be every bit-as thrilling as previous contents have been. The race is being run this year under the auspices' of the Masterton Harrier Club, and it wdll start in the main street, of Carterton, following the main road to Masterton until it reaches the empty section opposite the Catholic Church in High Street. It Then cuts diagonally across the section to Dixon Street, following Dixon Street down to the. main Park gate. It then goes through the main gate and follows the path .to the oval, which is struck just to the right of the oval, and follows the oval round for three-quarters of a lap, finishing in front of the grandstand. * * * *
Past winners of this event are: 1925, R. A. Bose; 1926, E. J. Hcffer; 1929, Stan Carr; 1930, Stan Carr 1, L. Rutherfurd 2, Jas. Burns 3—time, 53.51; 1931, h. Rutherfurd and J. Mulvey (dead heat) 1, A. Burns 3—time, 55.19; 1932, L.'Hack 1, A. Burns 2; 1933, L. Rutherfurd (K.) 1, J. Mulvey (M.) 2, J. Halse (M.) 3—time, 57.30. * « * *
L. Rutherfurd, the title holder, looks to have an excellent chance of retaining his title, although he will meet very strong opposition from his club-mate, A. Burns. C. Talbot, the Mastcrton Club and Wairarapa district five miles champion, will be the strongest contender, and provided lie masters the art of running on the bitumen he should have a good chance of adding yet another title to his record. * * * *
The race is scheduled to start from Carterton at 2.30 pan., and it should finish in Mastcrton somewhere between 3.20 and 3.30, dependent on the weather conditions. * * * *
As a small charge is being made to members of the public patronising the gala which is being held in the Park by the Y.M.C.A. Carnival Committee, arrangements have been made so that t-lic surmorters of both clubs who wish to see the finish of the race can obtain free admission to the Park Oval. Tickets which will obtain admission to the i ark can be obtained from the, secretaries ot both clubs.
