AMATEURS WIN,

Bv scoring a comparatively easy win over A. ,T. Shaw, the New Zealand open champion, and \V. Campbell, the . exScottish professional, in an exhibition match staged at the Lansdowne links at the week-end, T. H. Horton and J. P. ( Hornabroolc, the two Masterton KirkWindcycr Cnp representatives, again proved their ranking as the two leading amateurs of the Dominion. The amateurs won, 5 and 4. The match, which was played over 36 holes and, followed by a large gallery, provided some brilliant golf. The amateurs deserved their success, their play being more consistent and polished than their opponents. Horton returned a score of 68 for the morning, 4 under par, while only bad luck at the l<th in the afterno'on stopped Hornabrook from breaking the course record of 67. The weather was beautifully fine, and the course was in first-class order. In the mprning, fortunes fluctuated for the first six holes, but at the seventh Shaw and Hornabrook went into the rough, and Horton won the hole in 4, putting the amateurs one up. The amateurs were still one up at the 9th, the two previous holes being halved in 3 > s and 4’s. Horton took 35 for the nine holes, Hornabrook 38, Shaw 37, and Campbell 37. The next was halved, and Horton chipped a 30ft. shot for three at the 14th, but Shaw (fame to light with a fine 10ft. putt, to halve the hole. A three by Horton Sciw the amateurs take the next hole. The 16h was halved in 4 ’s. Horton was again the deciding factor in the amateur’s win at the 17th, but Shaw won the last hole for the professionals in 4 That left the amateurs 4up at the end of the round. Requiring only a 4 at the last hole to equal his course record of 67, Horton unfortunately “duffed” his third and took 5 for the hole. Horton’s card was 68, Hornabrook’s 72, Shaw’s 73, and Campbell s 74. Horton won the first hole in the afternoon with a 4, and Campbell took the second with a 4. A 3 by Hornabrook saw the amateurs win the next, making them 5 up. The next three holes were halved, and at the seventh Hornabrook had the gallery gasping when he sank a splendid putt . from about 30 feet. Campbell, who was getting results in spite of his rather unattractive style, won the next with a fine 15ft. putt for 2, leaving the amateurs still 5 up.' The 9th was halved in 4’s The scores for 9 holes were:—Horton 38, Hornabrook 34, Shaw 37, Campbell 35. The next five holes were halved and the amateurs won the match on the 14th, 5 and 4.
