FOOTBALL

BUSH DEFEATS WAIRARAPA. The Bush Rugby representatives defeated a depleted Wairarapa fifteen at Eketahuna on Saturday by 19 points to nil. A steady downpour of rain fell throughout the progress of the game, and the field, heavily ploughed by a curtain-raiser, was a sea of mud. After the first twenty minutes of play, Rugby, in the accepted sense of the word, was out of the question, and the second session was merely a farce. The heavier Bush forwards, more accustomed to the conditions, ploughed their way to victory and were entitled to what credit there was in the win.

The prevailing mild epidemic of influenza took full toll of the Wairarapa players. At the eleventh hour, Stringfellow, Devine, Himona, Hemi, Reid, Laing and the two emergencies were not available. It was impossible at such short notice to secure adequate substitutes. The game itself was a mud scramble. Tries for Bush were scored by Mahoney, Coomber, Spring (2) and Sharplin. Udy converted two. Mr B. Harvey was referee.

RANFURLY SHIELD. WON BY HAWKE’S BAY. CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. This afternoon Canterbury lost the Ranfurly Shield, which they have held since 1931, being defeated by Hawke’s Bay by the convincing margin of 9 points (three tries) to nil. The game was an excellent display of football on the part of the winners. The heavy, fast and determined Hawke’s Bay forwards, who kept their dash and fire from beginning to end of the hard game, was the deciding factor of the game. In back play, it was evident that Canterbury had been rather over-rated as to its backs. They played as well as they were allowed to, but splendid spoiling of the fast Bay forwards and very safe tackling by. the backs, gave short shrift to attacking movements. The reputed fast men among the Canterbury backs were rarely seen at top speed. The Canterbury forwards fought bravely against odds. The Hawke’s Bay backs were very sound, and at no time did a back make a mistake which let Canterbury away dangerously. Near the end of the first spell Oliver made an opening for Mann, who ran, and then passed to Oliver, who went over the line, tackled by two defcndcis. It looked like a try, but a scrum was ordered five yards out. At the very end of the spell, Bay, who had been defending, broke away in a passing rush. Smith shook off determined tackles by light backs, ran 25 yards, and passed infield to Reid and Stecrc. They were tackled by Oliver and Nolan, but Collins, backing up, took a pass and scored. The kick failed. The Bay forwards attacked harder than ever in the second half. A poor pass by Mortlock to Oliver let Smith away. He ran down the wing and passed infield to the forwards, and came in again, picked up, and scored a great try. Evans failed to goal.—Bay, 6/0. The final try was scored by Apsev, who snapped up from a scramble on the line and scored tvideout. The kick failed. —(P.A.)

ASSOCIATION CODE. SATURDAY’S RESULTS. Senior championship games played on Saturday in the Wairarapa Football Association’s competition resulted in fairly easy victories for Albion and Masterton. As the Park Oval was not available, the Albion-United game was played on the Whatman ground by courtesy of the authorities of Whatman Home. Despite some uncertainty amongst players owing to the short notice in regard to the Park Oval not being available, both United and Albion fielded full and good strength teams at the Whatman ground. Donaldson, who lias returned to Masterton, reappeared in the Albion team as outside right, and G. Longworth played left full-back in place of Preston. After an absence of some six or seven weeks, T. James Avas seen in the United team once again. Albion’s better . combination enabled them to outivit the quite strong defence of United, to pile up a three goal lead in the first half. While both teams missed opportunities, United Avere unlucky not to score from a penalty, and later Avhen the ball hit the cross-bar, folloAving a header by Judd. Frank Pool had a fairly easy (lay, .but his penalty save Avas a splendid effort. Sound combination between J. Bell, A. Bell and Russell led to tho latter, scoring Albion’s first goal after Nancar'roAV had made a brilliant save from a fast ground shot by A. Bell. R. Bell scored from a corner kick, and again before half time. The second half saAV a much closer .struggle, and each side scored tAvo goals. A. Bell scored tAvice for Albiom and Collison and James for United. Albion continued to display better combination, and, as in the first half, Nancarrow had much to do. Right through he gave a fine display of goal-keeping, and could hardly be blamed for any of the goals scored against his side. The majority came from scrambles in front of goal, or from second shots after he had been forced out of position. The game ended: Albion 5, United 2. Mr A. Cretney Avas the referee.

MASTERTON a-. CARTERTON. Masterton Avas short-handed in their gamo with Carterton at Carrington Park, Carterton, but Avas able to collect the full points, defeating Carterton by 8 goals to 5. Mr R. J. Weir Avas the referee.
