HELP THYSELF.
Probably nowhere in New Zealand to-day is tlie doctrine of “help thyself” put into operation more than in Masterton. Gradually the principle of relying upon someone else for assistance is being replaced by that of a quid pro quo for any help given. There was a time in Masterton—and not so many years ago, either —when what may be termed bare-faced cadging was indulged in, with the object of securing funds for a particular institution or cause. A system of blackmail —it could not be called anything else —was levied regularly on the tradespeople of Masterton, for those who did not contribute money or kind to the concern for which funds were being solicited stood to lose in business. This policy still operates, but only to a minor degree, and should be stopped altogether. Nowadays, local institutions, to a large extent, help themselves, recognising the injustice of continually battening on the business community. In order to raise funds, card parties'are held for girl guides, golf Clubs, croquet clubs, school or church funds, and this spirit should be in evidence among all institutions. The public resent “cadging,” but are quite prepared to contribute a shilling or two individually, provided there is some return in the way of an enjoyable bridge party, concert or such like.
