HINDU FUNERAL PYRE

LIT IN ENGLAND. LONDON, Thursday. For the first time in England for many centuries a funeral pyre was lit near Woking, on which was consumed the body of Princess Sliumshere Jung, the young wife of the Nepalese envoy to Britain. The funeral was carried out in accordance with the orthodox rite of the Hindu religion. A pyre of sandalwood and other fragrant woods was erected behind a canvas screen. The shrouded body was borne thither. The bier was placed on the pyre and burned. The funeral party scattered coins en route as a sign that the dead woman had no use for earthly goods. These were collected by village children.
