NAPIER BREAKWATER

LARGE LOAN APPROVED. HASTINGS, Thursday. A proposal to raise a loan of £335,700 for the development of Napier Breakwater was carried to-day on a three-fifths majority by Hawke’s Bay ratepayers. Napier voted solidly for the loan, 2045 supporting it, against an opposition of 168; Hastings, on the other hand, was opposed to the proposal, 1119 recording votes against and 703 for. The surplus over a three-fifths majority of votes recorded over the whole rating area was 521. The proposal now is to carry out extensive dredging in the vicinity of the existing breakwater and wharves, the extension of the breakwater itself, the construction of wharves, railway tracks, roading, water supply, reclamation, and building as protective breastwork on the west wharves. —(P.A.)
