Presented by the members of Auckland Electric Power Board with a cigarette box, the chairman (Mr W. J. Holdsworth), in returning thanks, said that although he didn’t smoke he’d nevertheless find the gift very useful. Ho went on to say that when a schoolboy his father caught him smoking one day, and told him he could start smoking when he did. “He never did start,” concluded Mr Holdsworth with a laugh, “and neither did I.” And yet, as Bulwer-Lytton wrote: “He who doth not smoke hath either known no great grief dr refuseth himself the softest consolation next to that which comes from heaven.” Bad tobacco is often deadly, of course. But such tobacco as our popular toasted brands cannot injure even the immoderate smoker, be-* cause toasting deprives them of practically all their nicotine. And how good, how soothing, consoling and fragrant they are! There are only five brands of the genuine toasted —Biverhead Gold, Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Cut. Plug No. 10 (Bullshead) and Desert Gold. The quality never , varies. It is always the best. 411
