BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY
ANNUAL MEETING. ACTIVITIES REVIEWED. Tlie annual meeting of the Masterton Beautifying Society was held last night, the president, Dr. Archer Hosking, occupying the chair. Reviewing the operations of the society during the past year, Dr. Hosking said a great deal of its proposed work had been carried out. The socoetiy was making use of the land at the back of the Park and had planted eucalyptus and kowhais there. No doubt its activities could be extended in that locality. The society had a disappointment with the proposed weir and lake but had been promised that this would be dealt with as soon as the water above the site was controlled. The rhododendron walk was an asset to the town. The Allan Memorial Walk and Bridge was well under way. The foundations of the bridge were in and the material required was in view. There had been an excellent response to the requesth for donations. This work was in the hands of a committed with whom the Borough Engineer was co-operating and the committee was to be congratulated on its results. Referring to tree planting operations, Dr. Ilosking stated that Mr Gardner and other enthusiasts had in view the planting of the river banks', which was an excellent thing. The society ended the year in a fairly sound financial position. The grant of £IOO by the Masterton Borough Council had been of considerable help. The society had not held any carnivals lately in order to raise funds, but no doubt the time would come soon when it would again ask for public assistance. He was sure the public realised the good work it was doing for the benefit of the town. Mr A. W. Reynolds, in a brief revieiv of the finances of the society, said at the end of the year, 31st December, there was a credit balance of £271. The society was somewhat better off to-day, as it had since received the £IOO grant from the Borough Council. During the year the society had spent about £95.
“In a. few years’ time,” said Mr H. E. Gardner, “the Allan Memorial Walk will make a very fine sight and will be a great asset to the town.” It would be a very convenient walk from all parts of the Park. He suggested that before the next planting season a drive should be organised for 4000 bulbs, these to be planted along the banks. Mr Gardner referred to the excellent work being done in the Park by the Council’s Park Committee in the establishment of a rhododendron dell and in other ways. The trees had been planted in clumps and would form a colour scheme. He moved that the society congratulate the Park Committee on its work.
The motion was carried unanimously. President of the society since its inception, eleven years ago, Dr. Archer Husking was unanimously re-elected to that position. Other officers were elected as follow: Vice-presidents, Miss E. P. Maunsell, Messrs E. W. Payton and IT. E; Gardner: committee, Messrs L. Robinson, C. 11. Hanley, 0. L. Rutty, G. G. Tolhurst, 11. E. Frost, 0. R. Croll, A. W. Reynolds, hi. Parsonson; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr A. W. Reynolds. Memo discussion took place on operalions during the coining year. The possibilily of planting large numbers of native and other trees in the Harm' Pad dock area was considered. A hearty vole of thanks was passed to the auditors, Messrs Low and Cunningham.
