HARRIERS

MASTERTON CLUB. TALBOT WINS NOVICES’ RACE. The annual race for the novifces of the Masterton Harrier Club produced a winner of a very high standard in Dan Talbot, who, however, did not have things all his own way as his younger brother Dennis pressed him hard over most of the journey and it was only over the final mile that he managed to shake him oft and establish a slight lead. The race was held over one lap of the club’s championship course, a distance of approximately three and oneeighth miles. Promptly at 2.45 p.m. the race was started by Mr W. Pointon and for the first half-mile the field was well bunched but after the Colombo Road bridge was crossed the two Talbots began to draw away to establish a slight lead on R. Percy who was still hanging on well. Over the paddocks by the Ruamalianga River they steadily increased the gap and by the time Te Ore Ore Road was reached they had established a commanding lead. Now just as they were passing the hospital Dan Talbot slightly increased his speed and managed to make . a slight break on his brother Dennis. From then onwards the distance between them gradually increased and Dan finished strongly to win by about a quarter of a mile after a Stirling performance which definitely stamped him as a runner of class who should have a decidedly promising career ahead of him. Although beaten Dennis Talbot also put up an excellent performance and Avith a little more training lie should not be far behind his brother. R. Percy, avlio finished third, made a creditable shoAving although outclassed bv the Talbot brothers.

Detailed resultsc are as follows: — Dan Talbot, 20mins 20secs., 1; Dennis Talbot, 21mins 55secs., 2; R. Percy, 22 mins 39secs., 3. The othe,r members of the club took part in a friendly run over the same course before the novices’ race. Members are reminded that training has .now commenced and that runs are being held twice a week—on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, sorting from the Park dressing sheds at 7.30 p.m. KIATERE CLUB. The Kiatere Harrier Club held their novices’ race on Saturday over one lap of the measured championship course, 3 1-8 miles. The weather was fine and warm, but the course was fairly heavy after the recent rain. B. Rimene set a very fast pace from the start but soon dropped back and on entering the paddocks Greeks took the lead followed by Wylie, Gaskin, Colway, Nelson and Rimene. About half way Gaskin challenged Wylie, who was very slow over fences, but failed to catch him, and Nelson, who started slowly, came up and passed Colway. There was no further change and R. Greeks won a great race by about 150 yards from Wylie. Times:—R. Greeks, 20mins 22sees; Wylie, 20mins 48secs; Gaskin, 21mins 12 secs. All the novices were very slow over the fences and should practice getting over them fast, preferably with an old hand to give them hints. The juniors ran over the same course and the remainder of the seniors had a good training run over two laps. After the run Mr Trail presented trophies to Greeks and Wylie. Members should make the most of any fine nights to put in some solid training for the Bradbury Cup race on 2nd June.
