RIFLE SHOOTING

WAIRARAPA MEETING. The Wairarapa Rifle Association's tliirty-ninth annual meeting, held on the Papawai Range yesterday, attracted competitors from many parts of both Islands, ninety taking part. In spite of the troublesome wind which prevailed in the afternoon, some excellent scores were registered.

The championship was won by \V. N. Masefield, of Blenheim, who put up a brilliant performance, which enabled his name to be engraved on the Bidwill Memorial Challenge Belt and the Bidwill Memorial Challenge Shield. A light left wind prevailed in the morning and the conditions at the 300 and 500 yards ranges were very good. A change set in at the 800 yards range, however, and by the time the 900 yards mound was in use a fish-tail wind liad the shooters in trouble. A rather unusual incident occurred towards the end of the day’s shooting. In the ordinary course of events the service match, ten shots at 300 yards, is fired first, but in order to facilitate matters it was decided to fire it last. When the time came, however, for the firing of this match the Maori markers refused to officiate, holding that it was too late, and it was decided to abandon the match.

The prizes won at the meeting were presented by the president of the asso ciation, Mr C. J. Nix, who apologised for the absence of the Hon. A. D. Me Leod. Mr Nix especially eulogised th( work of Mr A. B. Balfour, range offi cer. The marking was good and the shooting was of a very high standard he said. The good ammunition thal was available that day, he stated, hac enticed competitors along. It was a great pity, he observed, that they could not get the Defence Departmenl to scrap the old ammunition which was being issued to rifle clubs, which were of valuable assistance to the country in the form of defence. The old ammunition was keeping the clubs back. He pointed out that in the Wairarapa they had tried to put on a handicap meeting in the sipring, but on account of having old ammunition they only had 33 entries. Mr Nix then proceeded to present the trophies won during the day. The winners of trophies were: —Bidwill Memorial Challenge Belt, Bidwill Memorial Challenge Shield, Buchanan Memorial Challenge Cup, W. N. Masefield; Walden Challenge Cup, P. J.
