LABOUR PARTY

NEW LEADER. MR M. J. SAVAGE ELECTED. . WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Labour caucus unanimously decided to-day to appoint Mr M. J. Savage, member for Auckland West, Loader of the Labour Party in succession to the late Mr H. E. Holland. Mr Savage thus becomes Leader of the Opposition. Mr P. Fraser, the member for Wellington Central, was unanimously elected Deputy-Leader of the Party, and in addition he retains the position of Parliamentary secretary of the party. Mr W. .T. Jordan, member for Manukau, will become a front-bencher, and will sit with Mr E. J. Howard, the member for Christchurch South.

An enthusiastic reception from all A sides of the House was accorded Mr when he took his seat in the House of Representatives this afternoon as Leader of the Opposition, The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. "W. Forbes) expressed his pleasure at Mr Savage’s appointment. He had been associated with Mr Savage for a very long time, and lie was sure that the present relations which had always existed would continue. “I am quite sure,” said Mr Forlrs, * 'that Mr Savage will fill the position of Leader of the Opposition with credit to himself and his party.” Mr Savage, who was warmly applauded, thanked the Prime Minister and the House for the very friendly reception accorded him. He said he Roped to be able to play the part of a man, as had his predecessor. —(P.A.)
