MASTERTON RACES.
The nominations received by the Masterton Racing Club for its spring meeting should lead the stewards to anticipate a successful gathering. The chib has always been noted for the clean sport which it provides, and while the class of horse competing at Masterton has often been of New Zealand Cup standard, it does not require the stamp of horse to be up to the ability of winning a New Zealand Cup or a Derby to make the racing high grade and interesting to patrons. The Masterton Club has always provided the public with racing which they can enjoy, whether their investments on the totalisator have been successful or not. The club has realised the soundness of catering for its patrons on popular lines, and is prepared to meet the wishes of the followers of “the sport of kings” in any direction which will add to their enjoyment while attending the meeting at the Opaki racecourse. But for the loyalty and self-sacrifice of the stewards, it is quite probable that the Masterton Club would not now be in existence, because of the stiff uphill fight which the club had —in common with other clubs in the Dominion —to make for its very life; their reward should be a most successful meeting on 14th October.
