The head of the Nelson House at the Wairarapa High School, E. Chesterman, who is also head prefect of the school, was farewelled yesterday. Reference to his impending departure and also to that of another prefect, S. Barr, was made by the Principal, Mr H. B. Tomlinson. At the plain and fancy dress dance held at School House last night, friendly farewell words were also addressed to the departing pupils. . The North Island Motor Union, sitting at Auckland, re-elected Mr W. A. O’Callaghan (Hawera) president, and Messrs J. H. Edmundson (Napier) and D. E. Porritt (Wanganui), vice-presi-dents and elected the following executive: —Messrs Grayson (Auckland), Palliser (Wellington), Edmundson (Hawke’s Bay), Maekie (Manawatu), Roydhouse (Wairarapa), Carter (South Taranaki), Macfarlane (Wanganui), and Duff (Taranaki). The death occurred on Thursday evening of Mrs Alice Brassel, wife of Mr H. P. Brassel, of Parkvale. The late Mrs Brassel, who was 54 years of age, had an illness some weeks ago, but had apparently quite recovered. On Thursday afternoon she visited a neighbour and on returning home suddenly collapsed and died about an hour later. She leaves a husband and a family of four sons and one daughter. Mrs Ross, of Wyndham Street; Carterton, is a sister and Messrs W. Hopwood, of Tinwald, Ashburton, and H. Hopwood, Rakaia, are brothers.

The death occurred in Christchurch recently of Mr James R. Montgomery, headmaster of the Geraldine District High School. Mr Montgomery was for ten years on the staff of the Otago Boys’ High School. He played cricket for Otago several times, at one time being captain, and his success at football was outstanding. He was a fine forward, and represented his province in the seasons from 1888 to 1892, arid was captain in the last two years. He was also captain of the university team in those two seasons. Mr Montgomery was a notable rifle shot, being in 1890 the champion shot of the Otago Rifle Association.

At a gathering in the Masterton Technical School yesterday, the staff and pupils farewelled Miss G. G. Matthews, who has been teaching at the school for over seven years, and Mr E. D. Robins, who has filled the temporary position of science and mathematics master. Mr L. J. Taylor and Mr G. Selby, on behalf of the Wairarapa Secondary Education Board, expressed regret that Miss Matthews was leaving ,and extended congratulations on her'approaching marriage, accompanied by every gooxf wish.; 011 behalf of the staff and pupils, a set of crystal ware was presented to Miss Matthews, and a book to Mr Robins. After school had been dismissed/the staff met at an enjoyable afternoon tea.
