DESTITUTION PLEA
UNEMPLOYED IN GISBORNE. GISBORNE, Thursday. Reference to numerous necessitous cases in Gisborne was made at a meeting of the Cook Hospital Board to-day, the chairman, Mr M. R. Trafford, stating that a deputation of fifty men had waited on the board, intimating that they were absolutely destitute on account of the Unemployment Board not giving work in stand-down weeks, which in Gisborne is every alternate week. . . These men, stated the chairman, were only allowed to earn an average of 19/9 a week for married men and 9/a week for single men. After discussion it was decided to send a telegram to the Minister of Employment urging that the allocation be made to Gisborne so that relief men will receive at least one day’s work in the standdown weeks, as the Hospital Boaid cannot accept the responsibility of those men, no provision being made in the estimates for fit men—(F.A.)
