TRAGEDY AT SEA
THE CHESTERTON INCIDENT. (Received Friday, 12.5 p.m.) LONDON, Thursday. A verdict of misadventure was returned at the inquest on Jean Chesterton, who was killed when territorial aeroplanes fired upon a boat in which she was in, mistaking it for a buoy target. Joan Cliesterman gave evidence that she saw the danger flags but was perfectly sure that they were outside the danger zone. Aircraftsman Boaliemia, who fired the fatal shot; gave evidence that he did not fire until lie was past the red flag, when lie aimed at the first object lie saw, thinking it was a target. He added that the sun glare made all look alike. Air Force men ashore who were responsible for the signals gave evidence that the boat was within the safety area but tlie fliers expressed the opinion that the boat was sufficiently close to the danger zone to be mistaken for a target, especially in view of the glare of the sun.
