WIMBLEDON TOURNAMENT.
STEDMAN BEATEN.
LONDON, Saturday.
The Australian, J. C. CraAvford, gained an easy victory, in.his mateh against the NeAv Zealander, A. C. Stedman, in the Wimbledon tournament, but had some valuable .practice. The hugecroAvd present generously applauded iStedman’s plucky fight, especially as he is recovering from an indisposition. CraAvford quickly settled, down todisplay delightful tennis, and beauti-fully-placed shots ...drew constant applause. He won the first three games. •Stedman lacked his opponent’s repertoire of strokes, but Avon the fourth Avhen Crawford Avas just outside the lines Avith a after played pea-feet tennis.' - - Stedman served excellently, and in the opening game in the second set twice aeed, CraAyfordi Avho hadj lest a little of his ' accurrie.y,; enabling the NeAV Zealander tb win two -of the first games. The Australian’s backhand •brought the'score to 4-2. Stedman, retrieving Avell and getting many shots seemingly out of reach, sometimes caught Crawford out of position. TheAustralian, volleying superbly, took the set. 'Stedman almost faded out of the picture in the third set and Avas unable to reach drives doAvn the Avings. CraAvford AA'as in his best form and •Stedman AA r as unable to cope with his battery of shots, although OraAvford lost the seventh through over-driving. He immediately clinched the set in the next game. CraAvford now meets G. P; Hughes (Britain) in the quarterfinals.
Wimbledon is groAving in popularity yearly. Already all previous records have been broken.
Stedman pluckily left a sick bed Avith the concurrence of the doctor, Sir William Rees, to. join Andrews in the doubles. He played admirably. Results are as folloAv: —

Virginia Bice Who is partnering; Alan Stedman (New Zealand) in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon:—Miss Bice has an attractive personality both on and off the court. She is ranked No. 6 m her own country (America) having advanced four plaees since 1932. Proof of her progress was furnished at the recent Bermuda championships, where she beat Miss Hilleary, who is No. 6 m America, in two sets.
