There is no improvement .in the health of Mrs Arthur Burt, of Featherston, who has for some time been in the Masterton Hospital. On the occasion of his retirement, Mr E. F. N. Morgan was presented by the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, Carterton, with, a suitably inscribed entree dish.

The engagement is announced of Miss Eva. Phillips, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs C. F. Phillips, of Clareville, to Mr Clarence Price, youngest son of Mr and Mrs EL G. Price, of Solway, Masterton. Miss D. Penney, wlio lias been on the staff of Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., Masterton, for some years past, has tendered her resignation to the firm owing to her intended departure at the end of August fotr Tauranga, where she is going into business on her own account. . <<■

The last of the original pioneers of the Ilutt Valley, Mr Thomas Rodgers, passed away at liis residence in Rangitikei Line, Palmerston Noirth, on Saturday 'evening. Aged 93, Mr Rodgers had the distinction of being the first white child born in the Wellington province. He was born at Petone on 29th February, 1840. ■ The death occurred rather suddenly at Hoiropito on 'Saturday of Mr Angus James Petersen, eldest son of Mrs and the late Mr J. C. Petersen, of Clifton Avenue, Carterton. The late Mr Petersen was for many years a resident of the Carterton district and his many Mends will regret to learn of his death. The many friends of Mr and Mrs V. (Tod) Richards, of Hastings, and formerly of Masterton, will be sorry to learn of the death of tlieir eldest son, Mir Nelson George Richards, which occurred at the Napier ’Hospital yesterday after a painful illness. The late Mr Richards was 21 years of age, and was educated at the school at Mataliiwi, Avhere his parents resided for many years. The funeral is to take place in Hastings on Tuesday.
