HIDES AND SKINS
WELLINGTON SALES. At yesterday ’s sale in Wellington prices of sheepskins showed a further general advance, hut values of hides were easier. ' j Competition was very animated, I sheepskins, in view of the firm tone of the wool market, showing a general advance in values of three farthings per lb. on last sale ’a level, some lots making up ‘to a penny advance. Hides, which were keenly; competed for by both tanners and export buyers, were, however, on a lower basis all round, due mainly to the difference in dollar exchange. ’ This was to a large extent anticipated, as .sales recently held dn both North ‘and South-Islands have shown a decline from the prices realised here a fortnight ago. Heavyweight ox realised from a farthing up to a halfpenny lower; medium'and light ox three farthings lower; cow hides up to a penny easier; light kip and yearling hides, also calfskins, sold at par, while heavy kip were '5-B'dceasier.
