THE ECONOMIC POSITION.
The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, speaking at the opening of the South Taranaki Winter Show this week, referred very optimistically to tlie economic outlook. There are certainly signs of an improvement in conditions, hut the general public will not he carried away by Mr Coates’ optimistic remarks, which have an object behind them.. The poverty and hardship which is prevalent in the Dominion to-day would never have been so severe had it not been for tlie policy of extravagance indulged in by past Governments and perpetuated by the present occupiers of the Treasury Benches. Judging by the sum of money which is being extracted from the pockets of the taxpayer, there should he practically no unemployment at all in this country, because the amount should be sufficient to find employment for a large number of men and women. It is a mystery to the people of New Zealand why the relief rate of pay should operate when the Government is receiving millions from the taxpayer. The unemployment position is a disgrace to the Dominion, and is evidence of the scandalous waste of public money. The Government has no policy,., and is simply muddling through, blindly following the instructions of incompetent advisers. The economic position in New Zealand will gradually right itself, but we venture to express the opinion that there will he no thanks due to tlie Government.
