JUNIOR BAND

ANNUAL MEETING. The Masterton Junior Band held its first annual meeting in the Band Room last night, the conductor, Mr G. W. Hutchinson, presiding over a full attendance. A successful year was recorded in the annual report, which showed, the membership to be IS playing members and eight learners. There was a credit balance of £7, for which special thanks were'due to Mr and Mrs E. Tozer for their assistance. The Masterton Borough Council wrote to the conductor, congratulating him and the boys' on the progress they were making, and thanks were received from the Boy Scouts for the assistance the band had given at two Scout rallies. The conductor (Mr Hutchinson) took the opportunity in the report to congratulate the boys on their keen interest in their work, both in attendance and playing, and also thanked all parents- and others who had helped the boys and the junior band. Two quartettes from the band took

part in the Master-ton Competitions, one gaining fourth place with 77 points out of a possible 100, and the other being sixth with 56 points. Seven quartettes competed altogether. Ten boys were playing in the senior band. The junior band thanked the senior band, coupled with Mr R-. J. Young, for its work, interest and donations, on the junior band’s behalf, and also the ladies’ committee and Mr A. L. Askew,

for their great help; Messrs R. Pearson and A. E. Urwin, for donations and photographs; Mr G. W. Hutchinson for the keen interest lie was taking in the band; parents for their generosity and interest, and'the Press. Excellent attendances were recorded throughout the year. There were four outside engagements and 89 practices, a total of 93 musters. The winner of the cup for attendance was G. Sullivan, who attended 93 times, twice being late, while the runner-up was T. Sayer, who also attended the maximum number of musters but was late on four occasions. This was the second year in which Sullivan had won the cup, with Sayer as runnerup.

Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs Tozer for the supply of coffee, MrsAskew and the ladies’ committee for attending to the supper arrangements, and also to two anonymous donors, one of whom gave a medal for the runnerup in attendance, and the other a name plate for the attendance cup. At the conclusion of the business, a social evening was held, Mr W. White occupying the chair. A very enjoyable evening was spent, items being contributed a-s follow:—lnstrumental duet, B. Elliot and J. Billington; mouth organ solo, B. Elliot; recitation, E. Mills; instrumental duet, A. Clem as and L. Parson; cornet solo, D. Askew; dance, L. Tozer; instrumental duet, D. Askew and L. -Sayer; recitation, L. Petersen. In addition, there was a brass quartette and several items by the band.
