SWAN AND DUCK

GLOiSE SEASON FAVOURED. The proposal of the Wellington Acclimatisation 'Society to restrict me season for duck and swan shooting to fourteen days did not meet with the approval of members of the North Wairarapa branch of the society when the matter was considered at a meeting of •the committee last night. Arter a brief discussion, it was decaded that it be a recommendation to tne parent body that, in preference to a restricted season of fourteen days, a close season for duck and swan be observed next year. The chairman., Mr W. 0. Jensen, said the suggestion to restrict the season did not meet with a great deal of approval at the annual meeting of the Wellington Society. It had been considered by some members that if there was a close season next year the Government would step in and the society would lose control. To his mind, the society was merely tempting the more or less antagonistic bodies to take some action in ithe matter.

.Sooner or later, observed Mr F. C. Broclcet-t, they would have to restrict the season, limit ithiei bag or have a close season every few yeara. Unless some action in that direction were taken, he 'added, they would soon have nothing to shoot at. Mr J ensen, who mentioned that it had been suggested that the bag should be restricted to six, said he thought they should enter a strong protest against the proposal to limit the season to fourteen days. Thie-i birds had to be protected and personally he favoured a close season next year.
