ROUGH RUGBY.
If the game of Rugby is to prosper in the AVairarapa, then the Rugby Union should take firm steps to suppress rough play. There have been too many occasions in the AVairarapa this season when foul tactics —punching, indiscriminate kicking, and "scragging’'’—have been very much in evidence in senior and lower grade contests. The Press and private individuals have drawn the attention of the Rugby Union to what is taking place, and a doctor and a dentist recently wrote to the Union regarding rough and unfair play in one senior match. The
disgraceful exhibition in a junior match last Saturday calls for a searching enquiry by the Rugby Union. It is understood that the police intend in future to take firm action in regard to rough play, and where sufficient evidence is forthcoming, assault charges will be laid. The police are to be commended for this stand, and we trust that if the Rugby Union is unable to prevent foul play the police will. The power to stop unfair tactics is in the hands of the referees, and we suggest that the Rugby Union take over control of the referee appointments, and only select the most capable men to handle the championship games.
