BOXING
SCHMELING BEATEN. NEW YORK, Friday. Alax Baer, of California, defeated Max Schmeling, the German boxer, by a technical knock-out in the tenth round of a scheduled fifteen-round bout. Displaying terrific punching power, Baer caught the former world champion. with a barrage of rights to the chin in the ninth round. The Teuton was tottering groggily after the bell. Coming out savagely to finish the German in the 10th round, Baer let loose a volley of rights and floored Schmeling for the count of nine.
■Schmeling came up gamely, but was helpless, and Baer smashed him from one side of the ring to the ether before the referee stopped the bout. Baer had 13t pounds weight advantage. The betting was 34 to -one in Schmeling’s favour. Baer had the advantage throughout. The attendance was 65,000.
