CHILLED BEEF EXPERIMENTS. BOARD IS REPLY TO CRITICISM. -A meeting of the Wairarapa Provin- | cial Executive of thei N.Z. Fanners’ Union held to-day was presided over by Mr Hugh Morrison. A lengthy discussion took place on the Meat Board’s reply to the executive’s criticism of chilled beef experiments and occupied most of the morning. In regard to the general question ormeat research in the freezing industry, the* New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, an a reply to the executive’s letter in which special reference was made to the trial shipment of chilled beef made by Messrs. Thos. Bortliwiek and Sons, Ltd., states that the Board has been conducting experiments fulsome' years, particularly relating to the bloom on lambs, and as a result of representations which, the Board made, to Sir William Hardy, chairman of the Food Investigation Board at Home, arrangements were made for a detailed scientific survey of our frozen meat industry to be carried -out. The Boaid, states the letter, contributed £750 towards the cost of these investigations besides considerable additional expenses connected with the purchase of carcases for the experiments-, etc. The Board had made considerable investigation in the United States and elsewhere in connection with the development and possibilities of quick fieezing meat. There were a number of different methods and the Board had a mass of information relating to the different p TO C«CS S G S, The following resolution was passed: “That the Meat Producers’ Board be asked to keep the growers fully informed as to the requirements of the Home meat trade and how local growers are to best meet these requirements, also supply the fullest information in regard to‘the type of cattle to grew for chilled beef export and the most suitable type of feeding to achieve the best results, also fullest possible details of costs.” Following a report on the white butterfly it was ires-olvcd on the motion of Sir William Perry: ‘ 1 That the Plant Research Station be asked if, and how many, of the counter insects to the white butterfly can be provided for release in the Wairarapa and also that the Cawthron Institute be asked for a full report on-the Diamond black moth and the best means of combating the pest.”
