WOOL MARKET
LONDON SALES. INCREASE IN PRICES. LONDON, Tuesday. The January series*'bf wool sales has opened with strong competition. Merinos have advanced 5 per cent., and crossbreds are selling at par to 71 per cent, above last sale’*? closing rates. The initial catalogue of the series was an offering of 11751 bales, including 3529 New Zealand. About 7620 bales were sold.
A fairly representative selection was put before buyers. There was a crowded attendance, and brisk general competition was experienced. Yorkshire, France, andr Germany wore all bidding keenly, the Continental buyers being especially active for merinos. -Greasy merino wools advanced by fully 5 per cent, when prices are compared with the December closing rates. Scoured wools sold at par to 5 per cent., and fine crossbred-s advanced 71 per cent. Medium and coarse crossbreds realised par to 5 per cent. up.
SYDNEY SALES. STRONG COMPETITION. SYDNEY, Wednesday. At the Sydney wool sales to-day 11,422 bales were offered, of which 10,684 were sold by auction and 2344 disposed of privately. There was very strong general competition. The market ruled equal to the previous day for all descriptions. Greasv merino sold to 18±d.
