The Bideford Sports Club .will hold its annual sports 'On Saturday, 28th January, on Mr J. AV. Falloon’s paddock, "Rosebauk.” A good day’s outiug is assured at this popular and sheltered picnic ground and the list of events comprises horse, pony and local athletic events while children’s races will also be held. During the absence of the Rev. C. H. Isaacson, on holiday, it is alleged that the Vicarage, in West Street, Greytown, was broken into, and Constable 'Gregor has arrested a Native youth named W. Clark, on suspicion of being implicated in the affair. It is understood that some of the stolen property was found in the accused’s possession. He Avill be dealt with later by Mr J. Miller, S.M. An Auckland telegram states that Mr Sam Gudsell, an athletic enthusiast, is in touch with the New South Wales Association for arranging a visit of State crack athletes to compete at proposed meetings at Auckland on 4th March, at Taihape on 6th March, and at Wellington on Bth March. The personnel of the team will be G. Goulding, T. E. Hampson (who recorded 9 7-10 see against Victoria), J./ Sheaves (who ran the mile in 4min 22see the same day) and Duncan Gray, the Olympic champion cyclist.

At the meeting of the Senate of the New Zealand University at Wellington yesterday, Mr H. F. von Haast moved: ‘ ‘ That the Senate is of opinion that the old system of four district Courts of Convocation, each electing one member of the Senate, was preferable to the present system of one general Court of Convocation, electing five members.” Mr von Haast said that under the present system a large number of graduates were ignorant of the qualifications of the candidates, and that at the latest election the number of voting papers sent out was 5050, and the number of valid l voting papers received was 2070. During the discussion which followed, it was stated that the original intention was to avoid parochialism. It appeared, howe\ r er, that under the present system the qualifications of candidates in distant parts of the Dominion were not, as a rule, known to the voters in other districts. After some discussion, the motion was withdrawn.

The monthly meeting of the Masterton Central School Committee was held last evening, Mr ,T. E. McY. Calwell presiding. There were also present:—Messrs W. B. Nicol, C. J. Braggins, A. E. Freeman, P. Whitton, <x. ’ Masters and the new headmaster, Mr Coddington. Mr B. C. Drummond also attended and on behalf of the school staff tendered a hearty welcome to Mr Coddington as headmaster. The chairman also tendered a cordial welcome to Mr Coddington and members all expressed confidence that the interests of the school would be carefully guarded by the m'utual co-operation of the school staff and the committee. A finance report was submitted and received and correspondence and accounts were dealt with. Messrs. Nicol and Freeman were deputed to arrange for the supply of firewood for the next winter season, tenders to be called therefor in due course. Certain repairs and ’ supplies 1 required were left to be attended to by the chairman and Mr Masters. Messrs Williams, Whitton and Masters were apjJbinted visiting members for the ensuing month.

Writing from New York, under the date of 14th December, 1932, to Mr H. F. A J on Haast, Wellington, Mr Bruno Lasker, of the American Council of the Institute of Pacific Relations, said: “I have just come from a meeting at Avhich Dr. Peter Buck gave an. address on the Maori settlement of New Zealand that was not only informing but poetic and inspiring. I wish someone Avould finance him to go on with the splendid educational work he is doing at Yale, and through such occasional lectures as this.”

Pleading guilty to' two charges of theft, to two charges of false pretences, and to a breach of her probation order, Gertrude Aileen Taylor, a domestic, aged 43, was sentenced to reformatice detention not exceeding two years by Mr T. B. Mc-Niel, S.M., in the Wellington S.M. Court yesterday. Detective-Sergeant Revell said that accused had bought a- sewing machine valued at £23, and after paying instalments amounting to £l4/13/6, had sold it to an auctioneer for £5. As Mrs Creagh, she had bought another machine from the same firm, and after paying £l/3/- on it, sold it to the auctioneer for £5/10/-. She had also obtained goods valued at £l2/17/- and £4/17/- from a city firm by false pretences.
