AN INDIAN TRAGEDY. CALCUTTA, Tuesday. Mr John Gilbert Bourne, • DeputyCommissioner of the Bettul district, in the Central: Provinces, died as a result of injuries received from a tiger while gallantly attempting to rescue an Indian beater who was being mauled. Mr Bourne shot and fatally wounded one tiger, whoso mate attacked a beater and then turned on Mr Bourne.
