MAGISTRATE’S COURT

MASTERTON SITTING. POLICE AND BY-LAW CASES. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning Mr J. Miller, S.M., dealt with police and by-law cases. Eric Charles Burgess and Arthur lidward Martin, for riding bicycles after dark without lights, were each lined 10/-, costs 10/-. Driving a. motor car after dark without having the vehicle equipped with proper and sufficient lights, cost William Browning Watkins a line of £l, costs 10/-. On a similar charge Adser Larsen was lined 10/-, costs 10/-. Parking a car within six feet of a fire plung, William John Campbell was convicted and ordered to pay costs only. Defendant stated that the plug was poorly marked and not noticeable. Frank E. Bowering, for driving a motor lorry at a speed beyond the maximum permitted for the particular class of vehicle, was lined costs 10s. Charles W. W. Watts, on a similar charge, was also lined £2, with 10s costs.

Speeding at intersections cost 11. G. Fa ire v and Robert F. Caverhill tines of £2 each. Both were ordered to pay costs amounting to 20s (3d in each case. Defaulting for more than one month in the payment of the August instalment of "the unemployment levy, A. E. Freeman was fined 10s, with costs fixed at 10s. Mr Hanlon, of the Labour Department, said that defendant may have been able to get exemption, but lie had not applied for same. . Clarence J. Stowe, for giving possession of a firearm to a person not entitled to a permit, was fined 10/-, costs 10/-. S. R. Gerrand, who obtained the firearm, was ordered to pay Court costs of 10/-. Charged with the theft- of a bicycle valued at 30/- and the property of George Barr, Herbert Ronald Hickson and Lynn J'. Fielding were convicted and placed on probation for a period of one year. For using an unregistered slaughterhouse, Fred Butcher was fined £3, costs 10/-. Leo Woodley, charged with being idle and disorderly, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment and to be placed under observation.
