MASTERTON GASWORKS.

As the result of the keen competition of electricity, municipal gas concerns throughout the Dominion are finding that a once very profitable revenue field is being restricted. At the moment there does not appear to be any possibility of electricity replacing gas altogether, whereas it is on record that in some countries gas is largely replacing electricity for certain purposes. The Masterton Borough Council is amongst those local bodies which have found in electricity the serious cause of decrease in the revenue derived from the sale of gas. The Masterton Gas Committee lias adjusted its policy in. order to meet the competition from electricity, and has been successful in its operations. The sale, of gas has, of course, deereased,.as was to be expected, but thanks to the excellent work of Cr. Low (chairman) and his fellow committeemen, the gasworks is still a paying proposition. The Gas Committee is not blind to the strong competition- which electricity has brought about, and is determined to make the Gas Departmerit a profitable one for the ratepayers. The gas supplied is of better quality, and cheaper in price than that provided by most gas concerns in the Dominion, and this is strong evidence of the commendable efforts which the gas committee and the gas manager are making in the interests of the ratepayers of Masterton.
