Miss A. Bradbury returned to Masterton to-day from a -trip abroad. A Greymoutli telegram states that Mr Andrew Michael Carroll, of Greymouth, and formerly of Reef-ton, lias been invited to stand in the- Coalition interests for the M-o’tueka seat.

The engagement is announced of Miss Amy 'Charlotte Holdaway, daughter of Mr and Mrs E. S. Holdaway, Ballance, to Mr William Walker, son of Air and Mrs A. Walker, Puponga, Nelson.

Upon taking his seat at yesterday s meeting of the Wellington Education Boao-d, Mr A. Williams, of Masterton, who has been absent from recent meetings through illness, was warmly congratulated upon his recovery. Mr F. -G. Bourke, a former resident of the Pahia-tua district, has returned from Ireland and intends to sottie in New Zealand again. He had been staying with friends in Masterton and left to-day for Auckland. Mr I. V. Wilson, formerly of Featherston, was elected a life member of the Wellington Automobile Club at the club's annual meeting. Appreciation of Mr Wilson’s services to the association for some years, latterly as a member of the executive, and particularly in the matter of attention to the road sign system, was expressed.

A London cable states that Mr Arthur Henderson -has resigned the leadership of the Labour Party in a letter which recommends the party to revert to the former practice of regarding the chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party as the actual leader. Mr George Lansfoury thus becomes leader of the Labour Party, and Mr Henderson, who lost his Parliamentary seat at the last election, will remain secretary and treasurer.

It is understood on the most reliable information and official denials to the contrary notwithstanding that Air F. W. Furkert, Engineer-in-Chief to the Public Works, Department, and Air T. B. Strong, Director of Education, will retire on superannuation at the end of the current month. These retirements will be followed by the complete reorganisation of the administrative side of these branch-Cis of the service.

A New York cable states that Daniel Hickey, the Australian boxing manager and instructor, has died at the age of 50. In boyhood lie was a companion of the late Bob Fitzsimmons, the oxclilampion middleweight and heavyweight of the world. Later he accompanied Fitzsimmons to America, and occupied a corner when he won the championship from Jim Corbett. He trained many of the world ’s champions, including Alike AlcTigue and Paul Berlenbach.

The Alinister of Finance (the- Hon. W. Downic Stewart) will leave England to-day fe.r New Zealand. He will be accompanied by the Secretary to the Treasury (Air A. D. Park) and his private secretary (Air T. R. Aiclcen). Air Stewart represented New Zealand at the Ottawa Conference, and then went to England, where, it was reported, he was arranging for the conversion of last year’s short-term loan of £5,000,000 to a long-term loan at a low rate of interest. So far, no definite information khs been received as to the progress made with the conversion proposals.
