MAGISTRATE’S COURT

CARTERTON SITTING. Mr .1. Miller, SAC, presided at the monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Judgment by default was given for the plaintiff in the following civil claims: —W. Booth and Co., Ltd., v. C. E. Blake, claim £9 10s lOd, costs £1 10s 6xl; 11. E. Jackson v. P. Henderson, claim £4 os; ordered to pay amount forthwith, in default live days’ imprisonment; G. Huglian, Ltd., v. H. IEvans, claim £1 3s lid, costs Bs. Reserved judgment was given fof the defendant in the defended claim of the Auckland Seed Co. v. J. D. Hunt, for £S 7s Id, with costs. James Fisher Thurston, of M a star ton, was charged that at Carterton on Bth October he did wilfully obstruct Constables Robertson and O’Connell while in the execution of their duty. Defendant pleaded wot guilty. The evidence disclosed thht on the’ night in question the defendant attended a danco at Carterton, and, as his behaviour was not approved of by tho management, he was asked to leave the hall. Accused at first refused, but later did so, and when repeatedly Warned by the police to move away, he became obstinate and insolent to the constables. In imposing a fine of £3 and costs, the Magistrate said that the defendant had acted like a fool, and such conduct, had it occurred in a. citv hall, would have been likely to have led to a riot. A request that defendant’s name be suppressed was declined.
