RAILWAY DISASTER
TRIAL OF OFFICIALS. MOSCOW, Friday. Recalling a great Russian railway disaster in January last, the trial has begun at Petr-ovsk of sixteen officials involved in the hitherto undisclosed crash at Zelonaya on 15th May, Avlien passenger trains collided at a station, Avliich Avas converted into a shambles. It is stated that scores of passengers ■were mangled and many of the bodies were unidentifiable. It is alleged that some of the officials were drunk and mistook the signals. (On 17th January ucavs Avas released of a railway disaster in Avhich 68 persons were killed and 130 injured near Moscoav on the evening of 2nd January. Two suburban trains left Moscoav at an interval of a fcAV minutes. As the first passed Kossino station a drunken man tlircAV himself beneath it. The train stopped, but correct signals Avere not given the f-olloAving train, Avhich, travelling at fifty miles an hour, crashed into the stationary train, Avith appalling results. The confusion Avas increased by a reserve engine going to Moscoav on the up track colliding with the overturned coaches lying across the lines. A fourth train Ava-s rapidly approaching and Avas just stopped in time. Darkness added t-o the horrors of the scene and increased the difficulties of the rescuers. Eleven officials Avere arrested.)
