THE WELLINGTON RIOT. THIRTY-FOUR MEN CHARGED. WELLINGTON, This Day. Thirty-four men came before Mr E. Page, S.M., to-day, on charges arising out of AvindoAv-smashing on Tuesday evening, and the Cuba Street affair of Wednesday, Avhich Avas dispersed after a baton charge by the police. The court Avas crowded. Fred Gordon Thomas Brown (20), elected to be tried by a jury on a charge of having stolen two Avatches, the property of Mary Daubncy. He AA'as remanded till Wednesday week. Norman Ileidenstram (30), a drainlayer, Avas remanded for a Avcek on a charge of having committed mischief by Avilfully damaging a Avindow valued at £25, tho property of W. 11. Lloyd.— (P.A.) POSITION IN WELLINGTON. ALL QUIET. WELLING TON, Thursda v. Everything avus quiet in the city today, but the police did not relax their vigilance. Inspector Lander is ready at a, moment’s notice to deal Avitli any trouble. The special constables Avcre not actually patrolling the city streets this morning, but a large force is -being held in reseiwe for any contingencies. Patrolling by “specials” has, hoAveA’or, not ceased, and it Avill be carried out as required. —(P.A.) THEFT OF JEWELLERY. WELLINGTON, Thursday. Harry Clarence Berney, of Trcntham, Avas arrested by the LoAvcr Hntt police last evening and charged Avitli the theft of a gold brooch, a silver coin band, a silver Avristlet watch, a locket, and an ear-ring, A'alued at £5, the property of Walter Smart. He appeared at the Lower Hutt Court this morning, and AA’as remanded to Wellington. The goods, Avhich are alleged to haA-e been taken from Smart’s shop on Tuesday, Avere recovered by Detective McLennan in the bush at- Trentham. — (P.A.)
