STOCK IMPROVEMENT.

There is need in the Dominion today to improve the standard of the stock bred. If we are to compete successfully with those countries which are devoting much time and money to improving their sheep, cattle and pigs, we must bring to our aid that assistance which will contribute to the accomplishment of this. In the Wairarapa much has been done in this direction, but there still remains a lot more to be achieved. We have urged repeatedly that the scrub sire should be eliminated from the dairy herd. The low testing returns which some herds give is evidence of the need to bring our dairy herds generally to a higher standard of production by using only the best blood in building up the herd. Unless we can produce high class cheese and butter at a low cost we will find ourselves hard pressed to keep our present position on the Home market. The matter of improving our stock which was brought before the meeting of the general committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association this week by the Canterbury A. and P. Association has much to commend it, provided it is carried out without an appeal to the Government for assistance, and without the creation of a large number of inspectors.
