MOTOR ACCIDENT
TWO PERSONS INJURED. As the result of injuries received when their car plunged down a sevenfoot bank into a creek in .Macara Street about 7.15 o’clock last night, Mrs P. T. Gooding and Miss T. Gooding, of South Road, were admitted to the Masterton Hospital suffering from severe flesh wounds and shock. They were both operated on immediately after admission to hospital but their condition was later reported to be quite satisfactory. •Mrs and Miss Gooding were occupants of a car driven by Mr Charles Burton, custodian of the Masterton Club, who was also accompanied by his small , son Max. Mr Burton was proceeding along Macara Street from Worksop Road with the intention of turning up Bannister Street. He was unaware, however, that Macara Street, is not properly formed and is intersected, about half-way along, by a small creek, indicated at the end of the formed road by an embankment. Mr Burton’s car hit this embankment and was precipitated into the creek, a drop of about seven feet. The occupants of the car, it is stated, were thrown out.
The ear landed on its wheels in the ereelt and apart from a broken windscreen was not damaged. Mrs and Miss Gooding received fairly extensive cuts, apparently from the flying glass of the windscreen. They were taken to a nearby residence, and after being attended to by Dr. N. H. Prior were conveyed to the hospital. Mr Burton and his son both escaped injury. TRAP TOR MOTORISTS. Formed for half its length, Macara Street, .where last night’s accident occurred, is undoubtedly a trap for even the most careful motorist. The embankment on the south side of the creek is very low, and is unprotected; neither is there any sign in the vicinity indicating that the thoroughfare is not a through one for vehicular traffic. This street is only about six minutes’ walk from the Post Office, and it is surprising that'it has been left so long in, the state it is in. to-day. It is a real danger to the motorist unfamiliar with tills part of the town. A culvert at this 'point should not be very expensive, and, in'addition to making the street safe, it would provide much-needed work at the present time. ' tt is' understopd 'that there has been a number of narrow escapes from serious 'accident in Macara Street.
