PHAR LAP’S PROSPECTS. VANCOUVER, Thursday. The- three leading candidates in the Agua Caliente Handicap worked on a fast track to-day. Pliar Lap breezed six furlongs in 1.20. Spanish Play did a mile in 1.43 easily. Marine covered 9 furlongs in 2.0 2-5. Six of the most prominent horses entered for the handicap worked out against time to-day. Pliar Lap easily ran three-quarters of a mile in 1.20, his performance firmly entrenching him in the favourite’s position. Those in charge of Pliar Lap’s training said he has been! put through a more strenuous period of preparation for this handicap than for any races in Australia. (Pliar Lap is to have his first race in America on Sunday, when he will contest the Agua Caliente Handicap, of £IO,OOO, one mile and a quarter. The race will be run at about 9 a.m. on Monday, New Zealand time.) NOTHING WILL BEAT PHAR LAP. (Received Saturday, 10.0 a.m.) AGUA CALIENTE, Friday. Mr Davis said:—“Pliar Lap will go to the post a very fit horse. I expect him to run a great race.” Mr Woodcock stated:—“We will do what Epinard and Papyrus failed to do when they invaded America. This. Pliar Lap is a greater horse than either the French or English racer.” Elliott, the jockey, said: “Nothing will beat Pliar Lap.” THE GRAND NATIONAL.. Midwood’s Shaun Goilin (12.4) 3 Thirty-one started. Won by 3 lengths, with third horse eight lengths away. Forbra and Egremont ran over threequarters of the race in company, and jumped the last fence together. Forbra beat off a strong challenge to win. Only eight horses finished. Grakle refused to jump one obstacle. Gregalacli fell. TEENTHAM RACES. SECOND DAY. TEKNTIIAM, This Day. The Wellington Racing Club’s meeting is being continued to-day in fine weather. The executive of the N.Z. Racing Conference met at Wellington yesteidav to consider the application of A. P. Wilson, the Chief Stipendiary Steward, that the decision of the Auckland District Committee in regard to Hector Gray’s appeal in the Antique case at Te Aroha should be reviewed. The committee decided that the case be directed to the appeal judges of the Conference. —(P.A.) MASTERTON RACES. GOLD CUP DONATED. A special feature of the Masterton Racing Club’s autumn meeting, to be held on loth and 16th April, is the valuable trophy attached to the Masterton Cup, one mile and a quarter, the principal race on the first day. The specie stake offered is £IOO, but in addition to the £BO of this that goes to the winner, there is a gold cup, valued at. £125, that will also be taken by the ■winner. The trophy has been presented bv Mr C. A. Cameron, and is the most valuable that may be won by any racehorse in the Dominion this season. For several seasons the Riverton Racing Club, with a gold cup valued at 100 guineas, has offered the best trophy, but although its trophy is of the •same value this year, the Masterton Club has now been enabled to take the honour of offering the season’s best trophy from it. The c-up that goes to the winner of the Auckland Cap, the next most valuable, is of a value of £IOO. WAIRARAPA ACCEPTANCES. CLOSE ON MONDAY. The acceptances for the first day of the Wai.rarapa Racing Club’s autumn meeting close on Monday next, at 8 p.m. TURF NOTES. Broughton left for Sydney by the Ulimaroa yesterday with Araunah and Lady Alert. After a day' or two in Sydney they will go on to Melbourne, where the -y horses named will be raced during the next three- months. If matters turn out well the trip may be extended, and Tigerism may be shipped over later to join up with the team.
