CLAIM FOR LIBEL

£25 AWARDED. INVERCARGILL, Thursday. A claim for £3OO damages for Loci brought by Mervyn Holmes Mitchell, solicitor, of Invercargill, against John Street Baxter, also of Invercargill, was heard in the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon. The action arose from certain alleged defamatory statements contained in a letter written by defendant and published in a local newspaper last November at the time when considerable public attention was being taken in the restoration question here. Mitchell was president of the restoration league at that time and Baxter is champion of the no-license cause. The magistrate entered judgment for plaintiff for £25, with costs. As plaintiff had been completely vindicated by defendant the case did not call for heavy damages, remarked the magistrate, who, in assessing the amount, said that it was designed to impress upon defendant toe dangers of writing such letters to the Press.— (P.A.)
