MILITARY TRAINING.

The military training which is taking place under the volunteer system is, in most centres —and particularly Masterton—proving a greater success than was at first anticipated. The success or.otherwise of the volunteer system depends greatly on the officer at the head of affairs. In Masterton there is a particularly capable officer in charge in Staff-Sergeant C. E. Rogers, and it is due to his untiring efforts and tact that the military training among the youths of Masterton is producing such successful results. Staff-Sergeant-Major Rogers is a very popular officer, and is possessed of those personal attributes which lead to success in any duty he undertakes. Both in connection with the practical side and from the social point of view, the military training in Masterton is producing much better results under Staff-Sergeant-Major Rogers than was in evidence in the days of compulsory training. Those youths who are receiving instruction are keen on their work, and are to be congratulated in this connection. With the curtailment of the staff in Masterton, due to the economic pressure, Staff-Sergeant-Major Rogers is finding his hands full, but he has risen to the occasion and is making such progress in the military training of the youth of Masterton that other centres cpuld well take a lesson from what is being done here.
